Liqui Scruggs, Chicago Teacher Residency program

Liqui Scruggs, teacher resident, works with students at a table. Why did you decide to take part in the Chicago Teacher Residency program?
The vision of the Chicago Teacher Residency program really piqued my interest and resonated with me because as a Black woman, I personally understand the importance of having a diverse teacher workforce that reflects its student population. It is my belief that the residency program will equip me with the tools necessary to fill this gap.

How has being part of the program contributed to your life?
Being a part of the teacher residency program has given me access to professional development, networking, and mentor training that I ordinarily wouldn’t have had access to.

What does being a Black teacher mean to you?
The school to prison pipeline, unfortunately, in America is increasing; however, being a Black teacher means I get to be a part of the solution rather than the problem. I truly believe in the ideology of windows and mirrors; students of color perform better academically when they can see themselves in their educators.

How do you think schools and districts can best support you as a Black teacher?
Schools and districts can best support me as a Black teacher by providing more professional development opportunities’ specifically for Black educators.

What are you looking forward to most upon completion?
I am looking forward to having my own classroom and applying everything I have learned over the past year to create a safe, nurturing, and welcoming environment for high-needs students around the city of Chicago.
