May 5, 2026 — The National Center for Teacher Residencies recently facilitated a multi-day learning experience through its Boundless Educators Initiative (BEI) Design Academy, bringing together partners from University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Grambling State University for an immersive visit to the Norman C. Francis Teacher Residency Program at Xavier University of Louisiana. Hosted by Dr. Renee Akbar, Kenya Campbell, Tonia Muse Baker, and Brittany White, the visit offered a comprehensive look at both the design and implementation of a high-impact teacher residency program, alongside a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical context that shapes education in New Orleans. Participants engaged in rich discussions on program sustainability, including funding strategies, coaching practices, and supportive structures that enable residents to thrive—particularly relevant for visiting institutions working to build flexible, community-centered pathways into the profession. The experience also featured a panel representing resident, mentor, school, district, and university perspectives, reinforcing the collaborative ecosystem essential to residency success.
Equally powerful was the intentional integration of local history and culture throughout the visit. From celebrations of New Orleans traditions to a moving visit to the Tate, Etienne, and Prevost Center, participants were reminded of the enduring legacy of educational equity and justice. Guided by Leona Tate—one of the three six-year-old girls who integrated the school system in 1960—the group experienced firsthand the profound connection between past and present efforts to advance opportunity in education. This visit underscored the importance of grounding teacher preparation in both community context and historical awareness, reaffirming NCTR’s commitment to developing educators who are not only well-prepared but deeply connected to the communities they serve. A huge thank you to our amazing hosts and participants for an impactful residency learning experience!
