February 7, 2023 — The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) is hosting its 75th annual meeting February 24-26 in Indianapolis, Ind., and Keilani Goggins, Director of the Black Educators Initiative (BEI), and Jill Harvieux Pitner, Chief Growth Officer, both from the National Center for Teacher Residencies (NCTR), will be co-presenting with Boyce Williams, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Education, Frostburg State University, Maryland Accelerates teacher residency program; and Wanda LaStrapes, Ph.D., Faculty Administrator in the College of Education and Human Services at the University of North Florida, Jacksonville Teacher Residency.

Our session, titled “Utilizing Teacher Residency Models to Localize Educator Preparation and Center Equity,” will be moderated by Leslie T. Fenwick, Ph.D., AACTE Dean in Residence and Dean Emeritus at Howard University. We look forward to having the opportunity to examine the teacher residency model and unpack how teacher residency programs support the needs of specific communities and prepare teachers of color to teach students of color. NCTR will bolster this discussion utilizing data collected from NCTR’s annual survey and the research from the Black Educators Initiative (BEI) and the findings from the Center for Public Research and Leadership (CPRL). The Maryland Accelerates Program and the Jacksonville Teacher Residency program will share innovative strategies and detail how they address the daily challenges and opportunities of implementing a teacher residency program.
