In celebration of Black History Month, we are acknowledging and uplifting Black teacher residents who are part of NCTR Network teacher residency programs, eager to begin teaching a class of students as a teacher of record and make a difference in their communities.
Meet LaShay Robinson, Alternative Pathways to Educator Certification (APEC) at Columbia College
Why did you decide to take part in the teacher residency program?
I decided to participate in the teacher residency program because it allowed me to follow my passion and become the teacher I always wanted to be.
How has being part of the program contributed to your life?
This program contributed to my life by allowing me to learn many different teaching strategies and network with others with the same passion and commitment to teaching excellence.
What does being a Black teacher mean to you?
Being a Black teacher means advocating on the frontline to educate our youth. Representation is critical in the education field, and it is very effective for our youth to see Black educators at their schools.
How do you think schools and districts can best support you as a Black teacher?
Schools and districts can best support me as a Black teacher by increasing Black voices and representation in the curriculum. They could also support me by allowing me a safe space to come and express concerns and conflicts within the school and the district.
What are you looking forward to most upon completion?
Upon completing this program, I look forward to getting my classroom to care for and educate many generations to come.
