November 17, 2025 — In celebration of American Education Week, the National Center for Teacher Residencies believes in recognizing the contributions of those who may go unnoticed for the work and talent they bring to classrooms. One impactful role that comes to mind are teacher residents. We are shining a spotlight on teacher residents’ passion and contributions to the field of education by amplifying the real voices and stories of teacher residents across the United States.
Meet Thao Bui, Teacher Resident, GO Teacher Residency (GO Tutor Corps)
How did you come to find out about the teacher residency program?
I found out about Go Tutor Corps through one of my friends from college who had already applied to the fellowship. After having my first interview for the fellowship, I was told by the interviewer about the teacher residency program.
Why did you decide to take part in the program?
I knew I wanted to gain more structured teaching experience before getting a full-time teaching job in NYC, so I decided to join the teacher residency program.
Before beginning the program, what role(s) did you hold or continue to hold?
Before beginning the program, I was finishing my undergraduate degree at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Spanish and Hispanic studies as well as completing my initial TESOL certification.
How has being part of the program contributed to your life?
Being part of the program has significantly changed my life. This program has allowed me to move to NYC, my dream location to begin my post-graduation teaching career. I am very grateful to be able to have this experience and know that it will contribute greatly to my development as a teacher.
What does teaching mean to you?
Teaching to me is both a duty and a form of empowerment. Based on my own educational experiences, I know that education is not just about academics. Education is about equity, access, belonging, and voice. Teaching allows me to create learning spaces where every student’s identity and story are valued as sources of strength.
What are you looking forward to most upon completion?
Upon completion, I am most looking forward to building strong relationships with my students and other educators, gaining greater confidence in my teaching, and continuing to strengthen my Spanish skills so that I can connect more deeply with the communities that I serve.
We invite you to read more stories of teacher residents from our NCTR Network teacher residency programs.
