November 17, 2025 — In celebration of American Education Week, the National Center for Teacher Residencies believes in recognizing the contributions of those who may go unnoticed for the work and talent they bring to classrooms. One impactful role that comes to mind are teacher residents. We are shining a spotlight on teacher residents’ passion and contributions to the field of education by amplifying the real voices and stories of teacher residents across the United States.
Meet Michael Stephen Borg, Teacher Resident, Teacher Residency for Rural Education Project (TRRE)
How did you come to find out about the teacher residency program?
I first learned about the teacher residency program while searching on Indeed.com, which led me to the program’s web page. After submitting an inquiry, I made initial contact with a representative, and that began my journey.
Why did you decide to take part in the program?
I decided to take part in the program because I have long dreamed of becoming an educator. After serving in the military and law enforcement, I wanted to give back to my community in a way that allowed me to connect more deeply. Teaching offered that opportunity. The structured support of the residency, especially the chance to work alongside a mentor teacher, gave me confidence that I could learn in real-world scenarios and grow into the role of an educator.
Before beginning the program, what role(s) did you hold or continue to hold?
Before beginning the program, I worked as a substitute teacher for two years. This experience helped me explore different grade levels and subjects to see where I felt the strongest connection. Coming from outside of education, this role gave me valuable insight into the classroom environment and prepared me for the residency.
How has being part of the program contributed to your life?
Being part of the program has contributed greatly to my life. Personally, I have developed a strong partnership with my mentor, which I know will extend beyond the program. Professionally, I have grown tremendously as I observe, learn, and begin stepping into the field. My confidence in educating students has increased, and I feel more capable of helping them grow academically and develop into productive citizens.
What does teaching mean to you?
Teaching, to me, is about service. It means empowering students to believe in their abilities, fostering curiosity, and helping them find their voices so they feel seen. At its deepest level, teaching is about showing students that their dreams are achievable and that their voices matter.
What are you looking forward to most upon completion?
Upon completion of the program, I am most excited about having a classroom of my own and applying what I have learned. I look forward to instilling in students the belief that they are seen and valued, and I want to mentor future educators when the time is right. This program has inspired me to give back and helped me see community in a new light. Most importantly, I feel prepared to meet the extreme demands of teaching and to navigate them successfully.
