November 17, 2025 — In celebration of American Education Week, the National Center for Teacher Residencies believes in recognizing the contributions of those who may go unnoticed for the work and talent they bring to classrooms. One impactful role that comes to mind are teacher residents. We are shining a spotlight on teacher residents’ passion and contributions to the field of education by amplifying the real voices and stories of teacher residents across the United States.

Meet Alexandra Adames, Teacher Resident, Project Inspire Teacher Residency
How did you come to find out about the teacher residency program?
I first learned about the teacher residency program through Ashley Woodlaw, the Project Inspire Recruiter. When she explained how the program supports aspiring teachers through hands-on classroom experience and strong mentorship, I immediately knew it was the right path for me. It felt like an opportunity to truly grow as an educator while making a meaningful difference in the lives of students and families.
Why did you decide to take part in the program?
I decided to take part in the program because I wanted to reach more children and families and make a bigger impact through education. My goal has always been to help bridge the educational gap between generations and promote access to education for all students. I’ve always believed that learning has the power to change lives, and this program allows me to be part of that change in a more direct and purposeful way.
Before beginning the program, what role(s) did you hold or continue to hold?
Before joining the residency, I worked as a social worker with a strong background in behavioral and mental health for both youth and adults in the Chattanooga community. My most recent work focused on strengthening families to prevent or limit the need for foster care, as well as supporting foster care youth and families to increase their chances of adoption or long-term, therapeutic placements. Through that experience, I saw how mental health, stability, and access to supportive environments all play vital roles in a child’s ability to learn and thrive. That understanding continues to influence my approach to education, one that focuses on empathy, emotional well-being, and growth.
How has being part of the program contributed to your life?
Being a part of the program has contributed to my life because I am able to make an impact on the many students that I encounter throughout the day and I am able to be a part of my student’s classroom experience all school year long. Being able to see their smiling faces when they see me and being able to see their growth and excitement to learn makes me very happy and proud of this calling that I am blessed to have.
What does teaching mean to you?
To me, teaching is about empowerment. It’s about helping students discover their strengths, believe in themselves, and know that they are capable of greatness, even when they doubt it. Teaching goes far beyond academics; it’s about connection, understanding, and creating a safe space where students feel seen, supported, and inspired to learn.
What are you looking forward to most upon completion?
As I look ahead, I’m most excited about having my own classroom and applying everything I’ve learned through this program. I look forward to continuing to grow as an educator, building strong relationships with my students, and making a lasting, positive impact in their lives.
