November 17, 2025 — In celebration of American Education Week, the National Center for Teacher Residencies believes in recognizing the contributions of those who may go unnoticed for the work and talent they bring to classrooms. One impactful role that comes to mind are teacher residents. We are shining a spotlight on teacher residents’ passion and contributions to the field of education by amplifying the real voices and stories of teacher residents across the United States.

Meet Brieana Polk-Perez, Teacher Resident, Marshall Teacher Residency

How did you come to find out about the teacher residency program?

I learned about the Marshall Teacher Residency (MTR) program through my research into pathways to teaching in my community and local schools.

Why did you decide to take part in the program?

I’ve seen many teachers rush through the training process without the guidance, support, and feedback to become great life-long teachers. I see so much value in participating in this one-year intensive, which provides classroom practice, support, and individualized feedback.

Before beginning the program, what role(s) did you hold or continue to hold?

Before the program, I’ve held mostly program and product management roles at companies including Visa, Omada Health, and education nonprofits. While I’ve found ways to move the needle throughout my life, I’ve always wanted to make a real impact on others’ lives and provide them with opportunities to make an impact in the world. Making a transition into teaching allows me to provide strong educational opportunities to my community and our future leaders.

How has being part of the program contributed to your life?

Being part of the residency program has given me the chance to work with students four days a week, continuously developing my teaching skills and receiving the feedback and support I need to be successful.

What does teaching mean to you?

Teaching means helping students develop the skills to be great scientists, critical thinkers, and independent leaders for our future. In a world of uncertainty, I want to give our future leaders the skills and educational opportunities to give back to their communities and impact the world.

What are you looking forward to most upon completion?

I’m looking forward to leading a classroom of my own and, in the future, paying it forward by mentoring and supporting others on this teaching journey.

We invite you to read more stories of teacher residents from our NCTR Network teacher residency programs.
