November 17, 2025 — In celebration of American Education Week, the National Center for Teacher Residencies believes in recognizing the contributions of those who may go unnoticed for the work and talent they bring to classrooms. One impactful role that comes to mind are teacher residents. We are shining a spotlight on teacher residents’ passion and contributions to the field of education by amplifying the real voices and stories of teacher residents across the United States.
Meet Brian Tejada, Teacher Resident, GO Teacher Residency (GO Tutor Corps)
How did you come to find out about the teacher residency program, and why did you decide to take part in the program?
I discovered the GO Teacher Residency after applying through the AmeriCorps portal. I decided to join the program because I wanted to experience what it truly means to be a teacher. I’ve always loved learning and the process of acquiring knowledge, whether through success or failure.
Before beginning the program, what role(s) did you hold or continue to hold?
Before joining the program, I was a student at John Jay College (CUNY), majoring in Philosophy and studying what motivates people to act in certain ways.
How has being part of the program contributed to your life?
Becoming part of the GO Teacher Residency has given me a renewed sense of purpose: the drive to serve my community of learners who need both academic and personal guidance.
What does teaching mean to you?
To me, teaching means fostering a community where students can thrive not only academically but also personally. Without community, it becomes difficult for students to excel or even feel encouraged to try.
What are you looking forward to most upon completion?
In my two months of experience so far, I have witnessed how students face barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential. This has shown me that the most important aspect of learning is creating and nurturing a community of acceptance and appreciation. What I look forward to most upon completing this program is knowing that I have made a difference, even if it’s just in the life of one student.
We invite you to read more stories of teacher residents from our NCTR Network teacher residency programs.
