November 18, 2024 — In celebration of American Education Week, the National Center for Teacher Residencies (NCTR) believes in recognizing the contributions of those who may go unnoticed for the work and talent they bring to classrooms. One impactful role that comes to mind for us are teacher residents. We are shining a spotlight on teacher residents’ passion and contributions to the field of education by amplifying the real voices and stories of teacher residents across the United States.

Meet Edith Flores, Teacher Resident

How did you come to find out about the teacher residency program?

I discovered the program through my employer, where I noticed flyers posted around the school. I also overheard the program liaison discussing it with a coworker, which piqued my interest.

Why did you decide to take part in the program?

I was motivated by feedback from coworkers who praised the program’s hand-on, immersive approach. I saw it as an essential opportunity to enhance my teaching skills while learning from experienced educators and making a real impact in the classroom.

Before beginning the program, what role(s) did you hold or continue to hold?

Before the program, I worked as a behavior interventionist and had 14 years of experience in various educational roles, including teacher assistant, playground supervisor, and after-school math teacher. Currently, I am an Avance resident teacher in an 11th-grade Algebra II classroom.

How has being part of the program contributed to your life?

The program has profoundly shaped my perspective on education and community. It has boosted my teaching skills and confidence while allowing me to build a strong network of colleagues and mentors. I’ve gained valuable insights into the challenges my students face and learned effective ways to address them.

What does teaching mean to you?

Teaching is about fostering curiosity and growth in students. It involves creating a safe and inclusive environment where learners feel valued and inspired to explore their potential. As a woman of color, I see teaching as a privilege and a responsibility to be a role model, particularly in STEM fields, encouraging my students to pursue these paths.

What are you looking forward to most upon completion?

I’m excited to apply everything I’ve learned in my own classroom. I look forward to building strong relationships with my students, implementing innovative teaching methods, and fostering a supportive learning community where they feel safe to make mistakes, and a sense of belonging.
