November 18, 2024 — In celebration of American Education Week, the National Center for Teacher Residencies believes in recognizing the contributions of those who may go unnoticed for the work and talent they bring to classrooms. One impactful role that comes to mind are teacher residents. We are shining a spotlight on teacher residents’ passion and contributions to the field of education by amplifying the real voices and stories of teacher residents across the United States.
Meet Joshua Elder Davis, Teacher Resident
Norman C. Francis Teacher Residency (NCFTR)
How did you come to find out about the teacher residency program?
During my senior year at Grambling State University, the University’s Career Services Department took a group of upperclassmen to New Orleans for a career fair. During the HBCU Legacy Bowl Career Fair, I was introduced to the Norman C. Francis Teacher Residency.
Why did you decide to take part in the program?
I decided it was the best way for me to get into teaching without a background in education.
Before beginning the program, what role(s) did you hold or continue to hold?
I was very active at my university before entering this program. I served as editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, radio host, SGA senator, and royal court escort.
How has being part of the program contributed to your life?
Being a part of this program has added a sense of confidence that I can become an effective educator as well as in the HBCU education that I received. I have also gained the perspective on how there are different ways we learn and all of the different things that go into learning styles.
What does teaching mean to you?
Many experienced teachers I have spoken to have compared teaching to gardening, in the sense that the seeds we plant today will have their true impact down the road. So, teaching to me is preparing my students for life and hopefully higher education.
What are you looking forward to most upon completion?
Upon completion, I look forward to finding and developing my teaching style. I have already begun to gain a sense of who I am as a teacher. However, I believe I will gain a greater understanding of that identity with even more experience in the classroom.
