August 9, 2022 — Teacher residency programs, though not a new idea, have proven to be effective in recruiting, preparing and retaining teacher candidates, especially teachers of color. But how can these programs sustainably impact the national teaching workforce that is currently experiencing a shortage crisis? NCTR’s Director of State and Federal Policy Cortney Rowland wrote an op–ed on the American Administration of School Personnel Administrators’ (AASPA) blog answering this question with action steps on how individuals can support the work of residency programs, which can in turn improve the candidate pool of effective, diverse, and culturally responsive teachers our nation so desperately needs.
