As America demands more from its teachers, the education system is struggling to keep up.  The Center for American Progress (CAP) addresses this issue and offers a progressive policy agenda in a new report released this week:  Smart, Skilled, and Striving: Transforming and Elevating the Teaching Profession.  Authors of the report suggest that systemic transformation is needed to improve the teacher pipeline and ensure every child has access to an effective teacher.  This transformation begins with recruitment and selection into teacher preparation programs and continues on to new teacher training and support, professional development, compensation, and opportunities for career advancement.

CAP offers a series of long-term policy solutions for improving the teacher pipeline, including:

  • Ensure teacher preparation programs select candidates carefully and purposefully.
  • Require teacher preparation programs to improve coursework and offer higher-quality clinical training experiences.
  • Invest in new teachers by supporting their professional growth early on.
  • Reform tenure by setting a high bar for attaining it and streamlining due process.
