In addition to preparing new teachers who are equipped for the rigors of teaching in high-need schools, NCTR’s Network Partners provide leadership opportunities for highly effective, experienced teachers through the residency mentor role. In this role, mentors work together daily in their classroom with a teacher resident, helping to prepare and support the resident through a gradual release of teaching responsibility over the residency year. In turn, mentors say these leadership opportunities enhance their own professional growth and teaching practice. Further, mentor teachers surveyed overwhelmingly agree that the presence of a teacher resident in their classroom helps increase their students’ learning. And finally, NCTR Network program mentors feel that despite taking on the responsibility of guiding a teacher resident through a school year, the mentor experience still entails a manageable workload.
